THE STRUCTURE OF THE APG

Reflecting the beliefs of Aboriginal people throughout our country, the APG is governed by a body of Elders. They are entirely autonomous, acting as they should as the respected and prestigious heads of our government. As the Elders establish themselves, they will lead the way by negotiating with the leaders of other countries, develop policies and heading public meetings. The Elders will control entry to their membership, as is entirely appropriate.

Beneath them comes the Executive Council, made up of :

Chairman Mr. Bob Weatherall QLD.

Deputy Chairman Mr. Geoff Clarke VIC

Treasurer Ms. Josie Crawshaw NT

National Secretary Mr. Michael Mansell TAS

Executive Officer Ms. Kathy Craigie NSW

and the State delegates.

The Executive Council positions can be filled by popular elections or by co-opting appropriate people.

It was thought to be both disrespectful and demeaning to expect our elders to enter the A.P.G. by popular elections. Had we not been invaded, they would be running our nation. So why should they be banished to compete with younger Aborigines who have not yet achieved the status deserving of our elders?

The Deputy Chairman once said:

"We must stop talking sovereignty and start acting it."
